Insulated Render Explained

Solid Wall Insulation

Insulated render systems come in many forms but all involve 3 basic elements.

Firstly, the external walls are wrapped in thermal insulating boards in the same way a tea cosy keeps a tea pot warmer.

Secondly,a specialist render is trowelled onto the boards to weatherproof and protect from water and frost attack.

Finally, a weather resistant and through coloured finishing render is applied for decoration and long term weather resistance .

Types of Insulating render Board

EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE  ( EPS )  INSULATION

eps boardThere are three main thermal boards of which Expanded Polystyrene ( EPS ) insulation slabs are the most common. These are  lightweight, easy to chamfer and they are the cheapest of the insulated render boards .

They are generally suitable for most types of insulated render finishes but are not suitable for a natural lime render or a  brick slip finish. The thermal  U value they provide is similar to mineral wool but around 40% less than a phenolic or PIR board.

ROCKWOOL MINERAL FIBRE  INSULATION

mineral wool insulation slabsThe second type of board and around £6 per m2 more than the above EPS insulated render board is a Rockwool mineral board which is generally green in colour and reminds people of loft insulation which is also mineral wool. These insulated render boards are of far higher density and rigidity than loft insulation to withstand the UK climate.
These slabs are the most breathable of all the boards and have a similar thermal U value rating as the polystyrene boards with an A1 fire rating. Being a mineral wool though, you have to use a mineral bonding  render and not acrylic render as this will restrict the ability of the mineral wool to breathe.

KINGSPAN PHENOLIC FOAM BOARDS

kingspan boardsThe third insulated render board is a Kingspan phenolic board. A high density board similar to celotex boards, but with special treatment to withstand the elements.
These boards have the highest thermal insulation and fire rating. They offer a 40% thermal gain over Mineral and EPS insulated render boards and are suited to all types of insulated render and brick/stone slips.
As you have probably guessed they are the most expensive board and are around £12 per m2 more than the EPS boards.
