External Solid Wall Insulation
External wall insulation does not mean having to compromise on the appearance or having to lose period architectural features. The property above is a good example of how window and door headers and cills can still be preserved and maintain the original style of the property whilst gaining huge heat savings from having warm walls.
Solid wall insulation is not purely for those living in larger homes as heat escapes just as easily from the walls of a bungalow as it does from a two storey house .
In a lot of properties there tends to be one particular wall which is colder and possibly damper than the others and is often the south westerly facing wall that gets the hardest wind driven rain in winter. In such cases it can be practical and cost effective to fit outside insulation to this wall and leave the rest, possibly until a later date.
New build extensions in solid blockwork are also ideal for an external insulation systems especially if the remainder of the house is already rendered or has a mis match of different bricks and the wish is to blend in the extension so it looks original.
When extensive renovations are being carried out and they include renovating or replacing any existing render or pebble dash then the walls must be insulated at the same time unless they are cavity wall filled under Building Regs Part L .
When a brick home is suffering from worn out and porous bricks or the owner simply wants to completely change the appearance then it is common practice to apply a coloured render to the walls. Again if the walls are solid then insulation must be used as well as the render to ensure heating bills are reduced and energy is saved.
As you can see the use of exterior insulation offers both stunning visual improvements as well as great savings in heating costs and energy reduction . Also it can be applied to virtually any house type and on one wall or the whole house.
